Copyin folders to another directory
Hi There
I switched to Thunderbird just last year; in the new year I copy several folders to another directory for record keeping of the previous year. So, when I click a folder under my local folders and select move or copy it always just moves that folder to the new folder and not copy. I do this to save some time and not have to recreate the folders for the new Year. Is there something I doing wrong ?
Thanks in advance for your time
Joe

Hi There
Thanks for looking into this for me, I was hoping that I would not have to recreate all the folders again but if that is way the program works that is fine.
Thanks again for the quick responses and your time.

Hi There
This is no my issue, under "Local Folders" I have a directory called taxes I would like to copy that directory called Z-2024. I created the directory Z-2024 so I go to my taxes directory right click select "copy To" then select "Local Folders" >Local folders and select Z-2024 and it proceeds to move the taxes folder to Z-2024. See image below.
Thanks Joe
So you're trying to copy a folder to an identically-names folder? What happens if you slightly rename the destination to, say, ZC-2024. Does it copy then?
No, I have a folder called taxes under "Local Folders" I just what to copy it to a folder called Z-2024 (I just use the "Z" so the folder is at the bottom of the list) and under Z-2024 copy the folder taxes in that location. If I select copy or move it only moves the folder taxes to the new location.
You seem to have two folders with the same name. Do you get the same problem when you change the name of the folder?
OK maybe I am not explaining this correctly, I do not have two folders with the same name, I am trying to copy a folder called abc to another folder called Z-2024 which is the root dir and have a subdirectory called abc. So basically coping my emails from the previous year into a root folder call Z-2024. Then I go back to my original folders and delete all the data and start with the new year. If I wanted to move all these folders to the folder Z-2024 that works but if I select copy it moved it.
In 'Local Folders' you have a folder called 'Taxes' and it contains some subfolders which I cannot see the subfolder names. In 'Local Folders' you also have a folder called 'Z-2024' and it also contains some subfolders which I cannot see the subfolder names.
As I understand it you want to 'Copy' the 'Taxes' folder and all it's subfolders into the folder called 'Z-2024', but when you follow the expected procedure it 'moves' - not 'copies' the 'Taxes' folder.
To test - I've made a structure same as yours. I can confirm that I can replicate this - the 'Copy to' does actually 'move' the 'Taxes' folder into the 'Z-2024' folder and does not create a 'Copy'.
I've created a bug report on this issue. This is a link to that bug report so you can follow it: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1939906
Modified
Bug report has offered an explanation. The issue sounds like it is technically not a bug because it has been set up deliberately as part of the design.
It basically means a folder 'Copy to' will be interpreted as a 'Move to' IF the folder being 'copied' is to a location within the same account.
Workaround, it is possible to open 'Taxes' folder or subfolder - select all emails to highlight (Ctrl+A) then use the right click on highlighted emails > select 'Move to' or 'Copy to' and choose the relevant folder location in 'Z-2024' folder.
This would leave you with the Taxes folder in same location for reuse and also get all emails moved to desired location.
