Hi sabrajet, background photos in the new tab must have been displayed by an add-on, but the trick is to figure out which one. Could you check the Add-ons page to see what extensions are now disabled?

You can open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then scan down the right side. Usually the disabled extensions are at the bottom. Do any of them seem related to the new tab page?

In the left column, do you have a "Legacy Extensions" category? That panel will list extensions that are not compatible with Firefox 57 and later. Anything there related to the new tab page?

Also, did your Firefox perform a "Refresh"? That would cause your old Firefox profile folder (settings, data) to be moved to the Windows desktop inside a folder named "Old Firefox Data". Do you see anything like that?

You can install an add-on named New Tab Override at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/ . If you are running earlier than Firefox 58.0, you can get the different add-on versions at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/versions/ . You install the add-on and you type in search.yahoo.com (they have REALLY awesome pictures) Hope it works!
