Firefox just updated and I have now lost 25 years of book marks.
Chosen solution
Did you already reboot the computer?
You can also check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

hi, this should not happen under normal circumstances. did other customisations of the browser (like custom settings, stored passwords, addons) stay in place or does it look like a totally fresh install? can you restore your bookmarks from the automatic backups that firefox creates as described in Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer?

Same problem here (sort of ) FireFox updated to Ver 55xxx and after restart my bookmarks bar at the top was all out of order , had to restore to an earlier date (last week) . Now I am having to do this restore thing EVERY TIME I start Fire Fox . ALSO: when I click on a bookmark's folder to show the content it will put up a frame but nothing in the frame for anywhere from 5 to 30 second's, same with any sub folders.
ANY IDEAS HERE ?
John Drop back down to v54 until they say 55.xx is ready. And make copies of your bookmarks.
This may sound dumb but , just how do I go about doing this ? I have always just let FF auto update which is what happened here when the trouble started. And how do I stop FF from doing auto up dates ?
Tnx .
Updates have been disabled at the moment, so Firefox won't update from 54 to 55 until all pending bugs are fixed.
I have 55 already , that's what is causing problems !
HOW DO I GET BACK TO AN EARLIER VERSION ??????
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox?cache=no Be sure to read everything here.
If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.

Firefox 55.0.2 has been released to fix some problems with with the bookmarks (places.sqlite) in case the file path to the profile folder contains a quotation mark ('), so you can give this version a try if you have a quotation mark in your Windows user account name.
55.0.2 was what installed it's self this this morning on start-up and what I still had trouble with. It rearranged both the bookmark folders and the bookmark's within the folders. And when a bookmark was clicked on, it would put up a frame for the choice's but not fill the frame for several second's . After going back to Ver. 54.0.1 , everything came back into line and is working the was it should . 73
Try to create a new profile as a quick test to see if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
Had to RE-SET the bookmark's again last evening about 20:30 EST after running all day on VER. 54 , and then again this morning about 30 minutes after start-up (also on Ver. 54) . NO , I have not chased this monkey through the "Profiles" thing as mentioned above (that is getting a bit too deep for this "Ole Fart" ) .
Any other ideas before I start using "CHROME" (which has not caused any problems) ?
Alright, Stayed up late last night and did the "PROFILE" thing as described above, also ran "Crap Cleaner" and did a virus scan. Everything seemed to be working properly when I shut down at mid-nite with Ver. 55.0.2 running. Started up this morning, everything ran fine for the first half hour or so then after going for another cup of coffee I came back to the Bookmark tool bar being all screwed up again and the Version had changed to 55.0.1 (and yes , the auto update was turned off) . I have used "FIRE FOX" for years now and NEVER had this much trouble, but right now I'm getting much closer to using "CHROME" (which I really don't care for) as a primary browser ! PLEASE do something to fix this !
While 55.0.2 seems to be a bit more stable over all it still takes a while to display book mark folder content's and content of sub folder's .
Had to go back to 54.0.1 earlier , and it just blinked and re arranged the bookmark's on me again.
Any Idea just what is going on here ?
Are you using sync?
If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers before using sync again.
