Two days ago, I changed my the password on my email account. When I attempt to update the password in Thunderbird, I get an error message:

Sending of password for user name@hotmail.co.uk did not succeed. Mail server pop-mail.outlook.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password. [Error="AuthFailed:LogonDenied-LiveServerUnreachable-<X-forwarded-for.95.90.208.96> < XmlAuth-Consumer-457 ms-Oms-Oms-ppservere -puide > LiveldXmlAuth log on failure 'e3' <tarpit suggested>< UserType:OutlookCom> Log on failed 'name@hotmail.co.uk'.,User. name@hotmail.co.uk" AuthResult=2 Proxy=AM3PR08MB0021.eurprd08.prod.outlook.com:1995:SSLJ

Can anyone help explain this? The password is correct. I had two step authentication activated, but have since turned it off. Pop3 is enabled, and the server settings are correct.

I also tried every possible variable, I just don't know how to fix it.

Please post info:

In thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information Click on 'Copy text to clipboard'

in this forum question, right click in 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste' you can edit/remove all the info on fonts and printers but nothing else.

In addition please check the following: Right click on mail account in folder pane and select 'Settings' Select 'Server Settings' for the pop mail account. UserName should be your full email address.

re :When I attempt to update the password in Thunderbird

This is where you update password: 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab click on 'Saved Passwords' click on 'Show Passwords' You should see a mailbox:// and an smtp:// entry for that pop mail account. Right click on each line and popup offers a choice of editing a password or username. When finished click on 'Close' click on 'OK'

Please check the list to see if there are additional mailbox/auth entries. Your error message is very similar to the one suggesting pop needs to be switched on - again! but I wondered whether the server is receiving a password designed to work with step 2, when it has been disabled.

RE: checking hotmail webmail account

log into your account at Hotmail/Live/MSN/Outlook using your browser. click on the cog icon select 'options' select 'Pop and imap' POP - let devices and apps use POP. select 'Yes'

I had checked the "saved passwords", since I was aware it was a problem, and the issue of Microsoft apparently pushing towards imap. The password on the account wasn't saved: i had to input it each time I started Thunderbird, and again when I sent my first outgoing email.

I did just solve the problem, however. The new password had spaces between the words. This wasn't a problem on iPhone and in webmail/browser, but it seems Thunderbird didn't like it (!)
