I intend to store the cached copy of my IMAP emails on an external USB drive that appears as a mounted Volume on OS X. However Thunderbird does not allow me to select a path on the external drive.

And you're sure the path won't spontaneously change?

I have just tried the nearest I can on this Windows machine; I went to the Local Directory setting on account settings, and I browsed to a USB-connected external drive and I was allowed to browse to subfolders.

I didn't go so far as to select a location, but it seemed to at least expose the hdd.

How much of this tallies with your experience?

I can try this again later today on Linux, which should be closer to the OSX way of doing things.

It seems to be an issue only on OS X. It does allow me to browse the contents of the mounted volume, however when I select a location it just gets ignored in the text box.

It works ok here on LMDE; see attached image.
