Alter URL of Newtab tiles

I find it extremely inconvenient, that I can't simply change the URL of a tile in the Newtab window. The work-around through the bookmarks is inconvenient at best. In 90% of the cases you can't see what the URL is even, and so you go by recognition of the thumbnail - but whether this is a link "to the forum" or "one it's threads", is not always clear.

Also - I feel like I'm playing roulette trying to get the right things to show up there. It should really be as simple as right-click, "set url", get a prompt, fill in URL and be done with it.

I'm with you on that one, the New Tab page speed dial is still raw. You should send feedback to the dev team (as this is a volunteer forum) through the Mozilla input page here: https://input.mozilla.org/en-GB/feedback. One day it will be usable...

In the meantime, if you're not averse to a little typing exercise, go to about:config, promise to be careful and type in what URLs you would like to see in the browser.newtabpage.pinned preference. I suggest pinning placeholders first and then changing their values once pinned.

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL. You can drag a bookmark or history item from the sidebar and drop it in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin this item and have your own favorites sites present.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in prefs that you can find on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.pinned stores websites that you have pinned to a tile.
  • browser.newtabpage.blocked stores websites that you have removed by clicking the X button in a tile.
