My Firefox browser is constantly being taken over by ads and spam web pages. These no longer show up under "add-ons/extensions" which used to make the unwanted extensions easy to remove. I find some of these hijacking URLs (eg Trovi.com) in the config file where I remove them or change them back to my preferences. Is there any way to lock down the config file and addition to extensions in Firefox so I can stop fighting this constant battle? Thank you.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
