Is there a recycle bin (or some similar mechanism) for deleted messages?
I have on occasion accidentally hit the delete key while an incoming message is open. Of course, that's what I normally do when I want to delete a message, but sometimes it's an accident. The message irretrievably and permanently disappears. Shouldn't there be some kind of "recycle bin"? Shouldn't it goes into my "Trash" folder--isn't that what it's for? Shouldn't it go into my [Gmail]->Trash folder? I'm using version 45.1.0 on Windows XP, with a gmail account, with imap.gmail.com

There should.

Verify your account settings. At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings.
When I delete a message - Move it to this folder - select your Trash folder for the Gmail account from the drop-down menu.
Learn how Gmail IMAP works, it's not necessarily what one would expect. Your deleted messages may still exist on the server. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78755 https://support.google.com/mail/answer/82367 https://support.google.com/mail/answer/77657
