unfailingly, as I use my firefox during the day it gets slower and slower and eventually stops responding at all, and I repeatedly have to close it reopen it and run refresh firefox to get it responding well again. Why does this keep happening?

Some housekeeping - you have two Shockwave Flash plugins; you should remove the older one. Among your inactive(at time of posting) extensions you have two duplicates - Media View 1.1(not counting Viewer and Player), and Rich Media View 1.1.

I've now done a little research and Media View which I thought was a side issue now looks like the source of your problem. Google Media View for information and removal advice. I would recommend this one. https://malwaretips.com/blogs/ads-by-media-view-removal/ What do you use these for?

You should probably remove all extensions apart from Norton as they look highly suspicious to me. Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
