in previous versions of firefox there was a little golden lock that would appear at the bottom of the browser window then i entered a site where a password was required. this no longer appears.

This was changed intentionally, because the lock alone only indicated that your connection is protected against eavesdropping. To truly protect yourself and your online data, you need to make sure that the identity of the web site on the other end of the connection is verified.
