TB slow to start and message says there is existing version running?
I have just checked and I have Thunderbird 68.1.2 (32-bit) installed. When I try to open TB I get a message saying I have an older version already running and must close TB. Really annoying! I also receive constant messages telling me I need to update TB. I have done this 2 or 3 times and I still get the update message. Finally, it takes many attempts to actually get TB to respond to my double-clicks - what's going on, please? Also, please recognise that I am not particularly tech-savvy, so easy-read reply please. Thanks Mike

A beginning point might be to start Windows in safe mode. Do all of the problems go away? If not, which ones remain?
I tried 'Safe Mode with Networking' and I was able to open TB, although still a bit slow.
When I returned to normal mode it took me four attempts to open TB, and I also received a message saying I should update to latest version.
I did not receive the normal message saying that a version was already running and I should close TB.
Any more suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks Mike
It is quite probably that your last open Thunderbird never terminated. This is most often caused by interference from anti virus and other system level "protective" types of software.
Use the ALt+Ctrl+Delete keys to start the windows task manager some time after you close Thunderbird. Is it still there, perhaps as a service?
Open it before you start Thunderbird, is Thunderbird appearing before you try and start it?
