I received a window that suddenly appeared in place of the browser URL which I had selected. The address and wording look suspicious. Is this legit? Is it from Firefox or have I picked up a bug?

The firefoxpatch.exe is 100% FAKE. Do not run this .exe as it reportedly installs CryptoLocker, a ransomware trojan.

Updates are done internally in Firefox (by way of a .mar file) and by download from www.mozilla.org / www.mozilla.org/firefox/all

Mozilla does not host updates on random sites outside of a *.mozilla.org url.

This has been popping up for a couple months now. This fake so called network security scan and firefoxpatch.exe is preying on inexperienced Windows and or Firefox users is trying to trick them into installing it even though the download is not from a mozilla.org url.

Hi, it's a scam to infect you with malware! NEVER EVER click on anything like that - if you didn't, you are probably OK.

If you are in any doubt about the authenticity of update pop-ups etc., it's best to ignore them and check for yourself by opening the 3-bar menu > Help (question mark at bottom right) > About Firefox. Alternatively, you can press the Alt key to bring up the main menu bar > Help > About Firefox. More - Update Firefox to the latest release.

Hopefully it isn't necessary, but if you wish, you can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8 has antivirus built-in already.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.
