We have two PCs both receiving downloaded messages from web-based Juno e-mail server. One version of Thunderbird was updated to the latest configuration (24.5.0) and now that PC can only receive messages but cannot send, reply or forward any messages. We get an error messages that says: "An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: smtpout03.vgs.untd.com Authentication required. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again." Have also received a similar error message referring to a different server (didn't save a copy of exact error message, but it referred to a "Mozilla messaging" server.)

The other PC works fine with version 24.4.0. We have checked all Thunderbird settings recommended by others who had similar problems (Account Settings, Outgoing Server Settings, etc.) -- both PCs have exactly the same settings. The only difference is the version of Thunderbird installed. About ready to just delete Thunderbird and go back to web mail after 2 hours of trying to fix problem. I welcome advice!

I have done everything you've suggested and appreciate your help but nothing seems to help. So, I will just stay with Outlook. I am reporting the problem solved just to close the case. Again, thanks for trying to help!

Have you tried using windows safe mode with networking ... I think it will work because about 99.9% of errors that arise following a version update are caused by anti virus programs that are overly protective (in my opinion defective). My personal pet hate is Nortons as Automatic means block.

Unfortunately, I get the same error while running Windows in safe mode. I am also not a Norton fan, so I use Avast. I had already tried turning the anti-virus scanning off, because that was one of the other recommendations I had seen posted here. That had no effect on the problem either.

Thanks for the attempt to help. My frustration level is too high, I've started using Microsoft Outlook, after 10 years as a Thunderbird user...

Usually 'authentication required' means that you need to submit a username (or e-mail address) and password to the e-mail server, when sending a message. This logic is not different between Outlook and Thunderbird, and even with the latest and previous version of Thunderbird.

Of course you can try the previous version again to see if it solves the problem, although you'll be less secure because you would be missing the latest fixes.

If you'd be willing to get back to Thunderbird, say if your frustration level with your new app would increase too much, please see our article cannot send messages for further help.

In all other cases I'd appreciate it if you could mark this as answer so we know you don't need further help.

Tools menu > account settings > outgoing server (SMTP)

Check the settings are those Juno require. which appear to be Server name: smtp.juno.com Port: 465 User Name: your Juno email address Authentication method: Password transmitted insecurely Connection security: None.

However it would probably pay to check them with Juno. One thing that is certain is that the server name popping out in the error is nothing to do with the settings they provide, which indicates there might be a problem at the Juno end.

After years of using TB, I now have the same problem sending via Juno; however with Gmail, no problems. Also, using another computer with same setup (shared email accounts, etc.) I can send with Juno. Using Thunderbird 24.6.0. Help?
