Why can't I close individual tabs and pages or increase/reduce page size in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS/Firefox 16.0.2
After upgrading Ubuntu I've actually lost functionality in firefox, those problems mentioned but also unable to save bookmarks. Nothing works or works poorly. The browser seems very bare-bones with few features. I've installed a session managers plug-in but also seems not to function.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
I can't control size of screen, I can't open or close separate windows. It may not be firefox, it may be Linux/Unity sidebar but please don't make me study your product to try and trouble-shoot it, I am not a web-developer, those tools are useless to me, I just need a version that works out-of-the-box for Linux 12.0.4. No my add-ons are not the problem. Where are all the features I cam to associate with firefox? They are gone.
