Please do the following.
- Open Internet Explorer, click Tools | Internet Options.
- In the Programs tab, remove the checkmark where it says "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default browser.
- Click Apply/OK and then close it.
- Start Firefox and then click the orange Firefox button, then go to Options | Options | Advanced.
- In the General menu, System Defaults at the bottom, checkmark the option: "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup", then click the "Check Now" button.
- Click OK and then close Firefox.
I'd recommend you upgrade to Firefox 5.0.1 since the version you're running at the moment is vulnerable to attack. See this security advisory: http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html
Download from here: Download Firefox 5.0.1

Thank you - that has solved the problem - links simply open in a new tab in firefox. Marvellous.
