For some reason Java stopped working when I turned on my computer this morning.

I've tried reinstalling Java, and Firefox, but nothing seems to work.

The java website isn't detecting my Java plugin on Firefox. IE works fine with java though.

For Linux users: Looks like the problem is with the creation of the symbolic link. Might be an error in some of the instructions or the RPM installation.

Courtesy of Mike D: Got it to work on OEL (using Red Hat kernel). Followed instructions at http://java.com/en/download/help/linux_x64rpm_install.xml Downloaded Java (I did not have it) from Java.com and followed installation instructions for 64-bit RPD

Bottom line: The java plugin wound up in /usr/java/jre1.6.0_27/lib/amd64 The name of the file is libnpjp2.so My Firefox plugins were located under /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins

So I exited Firefox and launched a terminal session su root cd /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins and created the symbolic link with: ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_27/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so . (remember the "." at the end -- very important) Relaunched Firefox and there it was

Here a Java test site that should tell you if Java is both installed and enabled. What does it tell you, exactly?

Do you have any software or extensions installed that may be preventing Java applets from running? See the link I posted before: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#If_Java_is_installed_and_enabled_but_does_not_work

You also have an insecure version of Java. The latest secure version of JRE 6 is Update 29. Try to update Java to the latest version from the Java Control Panel's Update tab, which is how I updated from JRE 6 Upd 26 to Upd 29 a couple of days ago. (Open Windows Control Panel, find the "Java" icon, doubleclick it, then click the Update tab and click "Update Now"). See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#On_Windows

I don't know what software would prevent it from running. it works on IE, just not firefox.

I know it's not an add on considering i did a clean install of firefox and didn't download any and had the problem still.

Did you try updating Java to JRE 6 Update 29 from within the Java Control Panel Update tab, like I suggested? Do that first.

Since you already created a new Firefox profile and did a "clean install" (see Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems) you should list here, all Internet Security and privacy software you have running on your computer. It's possible that one of those programs may add an extension that is blocking Java in Firefox which may be automatically installed in all Firefox profiles. Start with your antivirus and firewall programs (some may be listed in the Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet article).

Also, please post a list of all your Firefox extensions, or copy everything from the Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page and post it here. See Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.
