Recovering blocked download
After an 8hrs download, without a prior warning, I get a "blocked" message (with further help referring to Google and such). Is there a way to recover the file? What kind of Microsoft like security feature is this? Help suggests turning off blocking *web sites*, which I certainly don't want. Is there a way to keep blocking the sites (something that may have dangerous contents automatically launched) but not downloads (something that I will open myself)? Is there a way to configure Firefox to issue warnings but not to make decisions for me?

How big is that file?
If you try to download a really big file to a file system that doesn't support that file size then the download will be canceled.
The file is about 1.5G. It has not been cancelled; it has been blocked *after* completion with a message stating that "the site may contain viruses or such".
That sounds like a message from your anti-virus application, not from Firefox.
(a) I don't have an anti-virus application. (b) This message appears in Firefox' drop-down download list, with a file icon changed; furthermore, the download disappears from Firefox' master list of downloaded files.
