Firefox very slow on battery power

more options

I just recently got a new Dell XPS 15 (2014 model) with windows 8.1 Everything works smooth except firefox. It's very slow, sluggish and unresponsive. It takes several seconds to start up and every time i load a site I have to wait for it to respond to any input. All the other browsers work fine.

Scrolling is also terrible, it's very laggy. I already tried starting firefox in safe mode to no avail.

This effect seems worse on battery power. When plugged in it's still there but not as bad.

What are some options to fix this problem?
