Ah, that's great. I have to say, pop-ups are becoming more frequent nowadays trying to get you to install software that is malicious.

But no, that is not. If the url doesn't contain mozilla.org or adobe.com in it, then it is not a legitimate site from either Mozilla OR Adobe.

You can install an extension that blocks most pop ups called AdBlock Plus. I use this daily and it blocks tons of ads and popups. https://adblockplus.org/en/firefox

Does the latest version of Firefox block illegitimate pop-ups from appearing? I keep getting "lpcloudsvr302.com" telling me I have to update Mozilla but it is not a Mozilla pop-up.

DO NOT USE ANY OF THE PROVIDED LINKS.

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Any time you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the web site of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to Mozilla.org or Firefox In Any Language.

Thanks Bermea - yes, I downloaded Adblock so I hope that will make the problem go away. I checked my version of Firefox and the website says I am up to date so I don't think I have to change the version I am using. Thanks again; your help is appreciated.

Hello, I too have been dealing with this problem for about a couple days now, and its been annoying how it randomly pops up a tab on firefox showing obviously fake updates that I would never click ok to anyway. Now I have scanned numerous times with various anti virus software including malwarebytes, and I even used adblock plus, yet the problem still persists. This is a terrible nuisance and hopefully something gets addressed about how to remove it soon. Any kind of help will be appreciated.

Hi tyler456, three more things to check:

1. Extensions
2. Non-default connection settings
3. Scheduled tasks

Extensions can inject ads into any page they like and show popups any time they like. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

• Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
• orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column where the categories are listed, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Does that affect the popups?

Connection settings can redirect how Firefox contacts the web, potentially allowing malicious insertions into normal pages. Check your connection setting here:

(WIN) orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced panel
(MAC) Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced panel

On the Network mini-tab click the "Settings" button.

The default is "Use system proxy settings" but you also could try "No proxy".

Any difference?

Some malware sets up Scheduled Tasks in your operating system to open web pages at certain times or when certain events happen. These open in your default browser. If you notice these are not exactly random but occur on a schedule, this would be worth researching. Steps to check depend on what OS and version you have.

I have not found any unknown extensions.

I have modified the connection settings to "No proxy" I will use firefox as normal and update should the problem persist in this way.

And every time I have used firefox since dealing with this problem it would just pop up at random, but a scheduled task would be a possibility as thankfully I can still use my pc even with that pop up tab open, but as of now I do not know at the moment whether it is scheduled or not.

In case the problem has to do with scheduled tasks and I may need more assistance, my OS is Windows 7 home premium 64 bit, and my version of Firefox is the latest version which is 26.0.

Thank you for the tips and I will check back whether the problem persists or not with the disabled proxy.

Hi tyler456, if you want to take a look at scheduled tasks:

Windows 7: Start button > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler

I don't fully understand how the categories are set up. There is so much stuff under "Windows" tasks...

You would normally only see such a pop-up if you visit infected web pages or are infected yourself, either by having installed an extension or if you have caught some malware on your computer.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

cor-el, scanning with Malwarebytes (even in safe mode in full scan) did nothing, neither did spybot. I ran adwcleaner before but all it did was just show a roaming appdata for firefox.

I ran combofix in safe mode lately and so far the problem has'nt been around along with not using a proxy. I'm still not seeing dodgy "update" ad pop up tabs as of 3 pm. Again I will update on any progress should any pop up. I'm also currently scanning with malwarebytes again just to be sure.

ok. i admit being spoofed for a moment. it looked like malware. it is non-mallicious malware that will install adware. found that out with google. there is a suggestion to reset firefox. ->help->troubleshooing information. i reset firefox to its default state. that didn't help. but, i had thunderbird & other stuff open. i ran malwarebytes which found about 6 adwares & removed them. still had the problem. i reset firefox to its default state again. but, this time, nothing else was running. this was much different than the first time. i still have the problem occassionally, but only when i have certain websites open. i think some of the banner ads on those sites cause the message to pop up.

also, for the duration of this problem, i wasn't able to login in to this forum to post a reply. i couldn't reset my password. i think this malware attacks that function of firefox too.

Givonz, I believe my problem started via compromised banner ads on imgur, as I heard other complaints regarding that being the cause of this. But yeah for me it seems to be affecting only firefox, and I have been avoiding imgur since the latest scan.

I ran Malware and it seems to have cleaned up a bunch of stuff. Also, I figured out how to use Adblock - you actually have to use your mouse to tell it what to block. It seems to be working. Thanks to everyone who helped me with this problem. Now I wonder why Norton doesn't block stuff - and I actually pay real money for Norton so why doesn't it block malware from hitting my PC?

Yeah, I went for about a full day and then the adware came back. And I did try blocking said site with adblock but sure enough it just came right back as of now. :/ SuperAntiSpyware seems to be finding some adware tracking cookies right now, I will report back if this garbage still continues or if the malware is nuked.

Hi tyler456, although none of your extensions looked suspicious to you, would you mind posting the list?

To most easily grab the list, open the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

• Help > Troubleshooting Information
• type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the upper left corner, click "Copy text to clipboard".

When pasting into a reply, you will notice lots of information below the extension list. You can delete the part starting from "Important Modified Settings" to the end.

Also, if you type a space at the beginning of each line, then the forum software will preserve the layout.
