An embedded tiff file sent via aol mail will not open in firefox. If it is sent by gmail it will. If it is sent by aol to IE 11 it will open. ??????

Firefox can't handle TIFF files internally. You will have to open the file in an external application or install a plugin like AlternaTIFF.
