Thunderbird currently automatically collects email on start-up. I would like it to collect email only when I request it, not automatically. Is there a setting for that? Thanks for your help.

yes. account settings>server settings. if you are new to thunderbird, I encourage a full read of the settings as there may be some you prefer to change.
