How do I get rid of pop-ups that tell me to get the new version that I already have?

I had an older iMac that no longer had FireFox support (along with a lot of other things). I got a new Mac mini that is running FireFox 47.0 and I get pop-ups that tell me to update to 47.0. Then I get another one in the middle of whatever it is I'm doing (in the middle of streaming a movie – come on!), I don't install every update I get notified about for any program. I don't want the pop-ups. I can go to my system preferences and find updates. I WANT TO STOP THE POP-UPS.

There was a Firefox 47.0.1 update.

Well, it may solve my problem but there is a stated security risk with it. Will I be able to check for updates in System Preferences? And why when I told it to update I later got the message that the update couldn't be made?
