After I have opened the main tab as my homepage, I want additional tabs to come up blank so I can type the site I want to visit.

Chosen solution

You can set the browser.newtab.url to about:blank on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
