Does Internet Explorer on Windows have sound ? In Ubuntu do you get sound from the button [Test Sound] in your Sound Settings ?

Have you tried in Firefox's safemode & with all plugins disabled by setting to never activate. (Or all except FlashPlayer if testing FlashPlayer content) See:

Seems like windows version is working. Still linux version is not working even in safe mode. In ubuntu chrome and vivaldi is working fine

Did you check your sound settings ? Do you get sound from the button in Ubuntu's sound settings. Do other Ubuntu programs play sound ok ?

I have not even got speakers connected at the moment, but Firefox 39 on Ubuntu does have sound when I have speakers, & with the correct settings and volumes.

Speakers are fine. Other browsers are working fine. Video and music players also working fine. Its only firefox which has no sound

Did you used the official build or you tried a make install from the source of firefox?

I did run a test in a virtual machine debian 8.1 i build and finally i forced to download all the libraries needed to proceed with the Installation and the end i was running without an error.

it was pre installed on ubuntu. I just update it when it shows there is an update. Actually it used to work too, suddenly stopped working

is better to download a source of a version you like (the only thing i care about is the no script and addblock plugins) try to do the make in your system by running firefox from a terminal by typing ./firefox& this way the terminal is used as an out put and you get the errors of firefox in there i took many errors and i forced to download the source in order to compile it on the virtual machine i did build utill i was getting no errors. I took many warnings as i tried to install it from my account and not root finally i forced to use the root compile in the end i did forced to install so many new libraries it took me almost half a day to set it up!? and too bad it was a virtual machine and not official build.

I need to instal a new disk for linux anyway.

The Nightly version is unstable and updated frequently, often nightly, as the name suggests. It is not the policy of support.mozilla to tell ordinary users of Firefox to use Nightly instead of the Release. (Unless we have a very good reason, such as a bug fix that person needs urgently.)

If you have a particular issue or know of a particular bug in Firefox 39 that is causing you personally a problem I suggest you start your own question about that subject.

Yes you would be correct to say bug fixes are going to be made first of all in Nightly, but that is at a price of having to deal with all the other changes and updates, and the increased risk that data i.e. profile information will be lost. We may run multiple installs, multiple profiles and VMs but that is not what the ordinary user is doing. We do not even document fully the use of multiple profiles in our end user facing Knowledge Base.

I downloaded a windows version, installed it using wine, and it works fine too!!!

John99 i was using Slackware before i get into vista x64 and in there there are not automatic installers for packages like apt-get i was downloading everything and i was using ./configure make make install etc you didn't see what he got from a terminal?

He forgot the & in the end as i told him to do so that we know from were the errors are come from the system or the firefox are marked like this

PS with the & in the end he is free to run su root from 1 terminal or stay in the account as a simple user nobody is using root account to play in the internet.

PS 2 i did upload and an image i did boot from the vmware player is simple machine with debian 8.1 and you see i have allow only the Mozilla site not Google analytics or anything else they using cookies to monitor what you visiting and this is not good. i'm login as a simple user and not as root.

The problem is not likely to be with Firefox 39 as installed by most people, but with something on your system. Rather than trying different builds and versions of Firefox your best options are

1. Confirm you have tried Firefox's safe mode.
2. Refresh Firefox that will sort out any major profile issues or add-on problems. It possibly is not going to help if Firefox in safe mode and with no plugins enabled still has no sound, but is worth trying.
3. If you have anything you need to keep, passwords bookmarks etc ensure you back up the Firefox profile. (We should not lose or damage this but belts and braces policy is best) The profile will be within /home/jph-admin/.mozilla Note the leading dot. This is a hidden folder
4. Make sure you have another working browser. (You previously mentioned having Chrome on Ubuntu)
5. Uninstall Firefox. You have the Canonical distro build installed. The Ubuntu software centre will have a remove option for Firefox.
6. Check Firefox program files have been removed. For Canonical Firefox they will be in /usr/lib/firefox

I do not know why your Firefox Mozilla Nightly is not working but it is much easier to reinstall the Distro version. When you say Nightly is not working are you indicating it has no sound, or that it does not function as a browser?

Hi John 99, I have tried all those things u mentioned above. I removed my profile and tried to run a new version, and its still the same . I tried to run nightly version, and it also has no audio. But I installed waterfox and Firefox for windows in wine, and tried to run, it has audio output.

This seems rather odd, so lets try to confirm some of the changes and methods that you have tried. ebinpissac said

OK you tried to install Mozilla builds of Firefox, but I was under the impression that seemed to have failed entirely as an install attempt with Mozilla Firefox Nightly.

If Firefox Nightly is running and has no sound please paste the troubleshooting information from that into your next post. I will put instructions at the end of this post of mine. If you have some other version of Firepx running with no sound, please state what that is, and also paste the troubleshooting information into a reply. It may look better in separate replies for answers to my questions, and each set of Troubleshooting Information.

You say you have tried a new profile. If that did not have sound did the new profile work otherwise ? for instance

• Did the new profile open and run ok ? (Other than not having sound )

  • In this situation it is good to check this is done.
  • Could you please repeat this process with the Distro installed Canonical Firefox. Please check the location /usr/lib/firefox before, and after using the Remove option on the Ubuntu Software Centre. Confirm the program files in the Firefox folder are removed BEFORE trying to reinstall.

How are you testing Firefox's audio output.

• Have you tried at least two different sites and types of audio output ?
• Can you give a couple of examples please

as you did see in the pictures i did upload i did download the source of 40.0b9i nightly in debian 8.1 and i did the compile for my system you can download the source from here:

it's 41.0b1 version (newer from one i did compile) and do ./configure make me install with the first make you will try you see how many libs you missing and the number will be huge as you need to install the new libs alsa-lib , GTK+, NSS, yasm, PulseAudio-6.0, etc also the new gcc compiler 5.2. You must download and install all the packages from the root account it took me half day to complete all the new libs but the make started and as in the simulation i had nly 2 processors it took long time to finish but in the end it worth it because i was running it with no bugs and no errors.

You wrote it your self you used wime and you had sound the wime is an emulation of win32 bit application (no x64 bits area allowed) but is successfully running applications like you are in windows 32 bits.

without the right libraries in linux what ever you do it will not help you.
