When I click on an email message and click one of the <delete> buttons, the little blue circle comes on, and I get a message "(not responding)". That is one click of <delete> for one email line. Usually happens after deleteing a few previous emails

TB 24.4.0. Windows8.1. Windows Defender. All up to date.

I checked. Do _not_ have McAfee, Norton, Avast, etc. on system or as Add-ons.

Tried restarting Windows 8.1. a few times. Problem remains.

Your original problem was about Thunderbird freezing when deleting messages. Do you still see that now?

Redoing the profile stopped the freezing. I still get messages with blank subject and 1969 date.

The problem of freezing was cured by saving all mailboxes in a folder called "mail before June 1 2014". I then created a new profile with new folders under local folders instead of folders under inbox. The only part of the old profile I retained was msgFilters.dat.

I only have 3 folders under inbox. Messages that are not put into local folders by higher filters in the list are filtered into 3 inbox folders. -- A folder called "bounced" if the subject indicates outgoing mail could not be sent. --A folder "Known Sender" if the sender is on one of my address lists. -- A residual folder last in the list of filters called "Suspicious" if the subject does NOT contain a weird subject like "!@#44%*(}{~*&^".

This last filter is a workaround because TB does not have an ELSE function.

Thanks to those who helped. My only remaining problem is the blank subject and I'll deal with that in a different thread I started earlier.

the only part about that I understood was "!@#44%*(}{~*&^".

If you have a list of filters they are processed in order. There is not a TB filter function "ELSE".

However, for the filter IF "subject is not !@#44%*(}{~*&^" put message in folder called "Suspicious" the test criterion will seldom if ever be true, so the last filter in the list puts the message in that folder.

Any message that has that arbitrary subject will remain in the inbox.
