When I click on a link it automatically opens a new window even although I right-clicked and clicked open in a new tab

In the past whenever I click on a link, it has always opened a new tab on the the same page. But now, no matter what I do I can not get it to open a new tab without opening a new page. Why is this happening?

Chosen solution

type in the address bar about:config

then press the button i'l be careful i promise

then type in the bar browser.link.open_newwindow

then double click on it and change the value to 3

press OK, exit firefox and restart.
