3 days ago I was trying to watch videos on youtube and i kept getting adobe flash player crash error. i went ahead and updated to firefox 20.0.1 and i updated to flash player 11.7. still getting the error. Ive clean installed both since. I've reverted to older versions even the 10.3 listed on Firefox Troubleshooting guide. Nothing seems to work. I cannot watch any video period on any website that i've tried. Ive ran Malwarebytes and virus scans both with latest definitions and all is clean. Now firefox just crashed as i was writing this. weird. some assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

One issue people have identified with YouTube in particular is a conflict with certain AdBlock Plus rules. I haven't kept track of the details, but if the problem becomes limited to YouTube, definitely try making an exception if you use that extension.

One thing that might have changed this week is that Windows updated recently. Sometimes this process also installs graphics driver updates at the same time.

This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues:

(1) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:

orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

(2) Disable protected mode (Win Vista & Win 7 & maybe Win 8)

Hi eda, it looks as though the update applies to Windows Vista and Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2008): MS13-036: Description of the security update for the Windows file system kernel-mode driver (ntfs.sys): April 9, 2013.

Edit

"This security update resolves three privately reported vulnerabilities and one publicly disclosed vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The most severe of these vulnerabilities could allow elevation of privilege if an attacker logs on to the system and runs a specially crafted application. An attacker must have valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally to exploit the most severe vulnerabilities."

Thanks, jscher2000. The statement of the purpose of the update is what leads me to worry about deleting it. I'm watching too many things on my machine right now to run the fix & track the results over a few weeks. Until I can take that time I've disabled SWF. (Win 7 Home Premium)

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate and I THINK it was Firefox either 20 or 21 that I had at the time. Uninstalling KB2840149 did not help. I Googled around a bit, ending up installing Nightly, which worked fine, then got scared off it by people talking about all the possible bugs, etc, it being a beta version only for people who know what they're doing, and by the time I went back to the regular Firefox it updated to 22. Flash and Shockwave are the latest updates and everything is working fine for the moment, touch wood.

As usual of late, it's only FF with this problem on my Win 8 Pro laptop. Adobe Flash crashes the instant FF opens--freezes FF--and finally get to the add on tab and disable Flash. Have the latest FF and my Adobe Flash is newly fresh from adobe.

Chrome and IE works perfectly with flash--it's only FF with the problem--as usual. I have gone from using FF 100% of the time to 50, then 25, and now 10. I used to be the biggest supporter of FF and now it's become a kludge.

[had to write this in IE because FF won't open with the flash lockup.]

Hi rprickett, if you start up Firefox this way, presumably Flash will not kick in:

Start > search box/run > firefox.exe about:blank

That should allow you to make the first two changes (1 and 2A) on the list, and the fourth (3) doesn't require Firefox to be running at all.

(1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.

(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista/7/8)

See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

So far, it is now working. (1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them. DONE

(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash DONE

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart: DONE

The reason it chokes upon opening is I'm a news junkie, and have several tabs open on startup for my news shows, and many of them have some kind of video news thing. I closed all the tabs, and did the above. So far, it's working.

thanks

Had Firefox crash all the time when playing videos I have uploaded. Following the instructions in

(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

I updated my NVIDIA driver and there's no more crashes. Win 7, Fx 22

How do I go about finding the update that you deleted and eliminated your issues with adobe flash crashing. I have tried everything else in the past with no luck. Thanks.

Hi meajha, I don't understand your question. Are you looking for a different Flash player plugin? Or do you mean removing the Windows update?

For Windows update issues, you may want to try disabling protected mode first. That's what I had to do. See: Flash hangs Firefox (eventually get script continue/stop dialog)

To see individual Windows updates, go to the Windows Control Panel, Programs and Features, and click View Installed Updates. (If it's Windows XP, Add/Remove programs, then check the box to show all the updates below the main program entry.)
