I have updated to Firefox 13 and now Gmail and Twitter are really slow or won't load at all. I have updated my plugins, I've cleared cache and cookies. What else can I do? Thanks.

hello, some other users have reported the same issues for gmail & twitter with SPDY enabled (which was introduced in firefox 13).

enter about:config into the location bar & search for the preference named network.http.spdy.enabled and toggle it to false by double-clicking it - this disables the spdy protocol. please see if that works & report back. thank you!

madperson, hi. Finally, one further discovery. Given your reference to my home network, which in my case is simply a broadband dongle, I changed the SPDY setting back to 'true' and tried again to attach a file in Gmail using this time the cable internet connection at work; this time the attachment worked without a hitch. In short, the problem I was having is NOT related to my computer hardware, but rather, it seems, to the kind of Internet connection I was using, namely, my dongle that would appear to be incompatible with SPDY.

is this dongle provided by your ISP and is there any reference to a hardware manufacturer or product-number on it? thanks, i will add this information to the bug report...

madperson, hi. The dongle is provided by Vodafone; it is a k3565 HUAWEI Broadband Mobile pay-as-you-go dongle. I have had the dongle since December 2009 and have not upgraded it since because the new ones are designed to 'expire' after one month irrespective of how much credit is left on them, i.e. they stop working until you pay out some more money. Whether a newer model would have the same problem with SPDY I could not say. Thanks madperson for your continued interest.

wow. 13 and wasnt loading twitter. jus a white page full of symbols. i thought an upgrade would sort it. BUT after upgrading to 13.0.1 this morning(and still suffering the same prob) ive been tearing my hair out! But this solution has worked (hurrar!) BUT one does wonder why upgrading from 12 would mess with these config settings anyway though? ......THANKS for posting this fix

You can check the network.http.* prefs on the about:config page and reset all bold user set network.http prefs to the default value via the right-click context menu -> Reset.

Check at least:

  • network.http.accept-encoding: gzip,deflate

I have disabled network.http.keep-alive as well as network.http.spdy.enabled (both are set to false). I still can't access Gmail.

"The page isn't redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies."

Twitter works, but not Gmail. =\

Firefox 13.0.1, Windows 7

I thought I tried that before, but I must have only cleared the last hour and not everything. D'oh. XD

Now it works. -.-;

Cool! This worked for me too. Thanks. I just wish these answers were a little easier to find. Stuff about older versions of FF were at the top of the list. I had to scroll down to find answers pertaining to newer versions. Should be the other way around.

Thanks for your help with the Gmail loading problem. Your comment about the SPDY helping pages load faster, does work, but maybe only in certain cases. I have a Dell 2350 desktop which is about 10 years old. When I updated to FF13 about a week ago, I did notice a definite improvement in loading speed.

We are looking for people still experiencing this issue. We need more system details and may need to contact some people directly. If you are willing, please PM me and we can work out the details. Thanks!

I also had the same problem with gmail not loading. Toggling the network.http.spdy.enabled to False fixed my issue. This is a serious problem and I pity anyone who's not computer literate enough to fix it!

Windows 7 Pro, FF 13.01 Gmail was loading rarely/poorly, and if it did load would often not refresh saying not connected. This wasn't to do with JS or basic mode, it simply wouldn't connect at all.

Changing SPDY.enabled to false fixed everything. No other defaults were changed.

Connection is Wireless.

None of the SPDY solutions worked for me. Removing only Google cookies did not work. What worked was to remove all cookies. Options/Privacy/Remove Individual Cookies/Remove ALL Cookies.

Hi, I've the same problem, I can only load gmail in "basic html" (which means chat's not working etc.) OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 Of the above suggestions I've tried: - switching user agents - changing about:config lines ('network.http.spdy.enabled' to 'false') - clearing all cache and cookies I've just downloaded firefox today so there are no add-ons. Any suggestions please?

Are there any network.http.* prefs on the about:config page that do not have the default value?

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

You can try to reset Firefox.

Reset creates a new profile and tries to import some settings from the old profile leaving the old profile intact.
