The Google page background image in firefox is way too large..

This happens maybe 70% of the time that I open Firefox at the Google page, sometimes I open the browser at the Google page and it displays correctly, but often (As now..) it displays the background image of the word "Google" so huge that it cannot fit into the box provided for it.

The search bar seems to be occluded or squashed by this huge image and finding the cursor in there is very difficult. I have a screenshot but ain't sure how to get that to you yet. Really hope you can help me fix this, it's been this way for some months now, I have uninstalled all zooming add-ons/plugins and have cleared the cache with no success. I have uninstalled, Firefox with Revo totally stripped it out re-installed but the problem resurfaced right away. This behaviour only seems to affect the Google homepage and IE9/Chrome display it perfectly.

Chosen solution

You might also want to clear out your Google cookies in case there are some inconsistent or obsolete settings being sent to Google when you load the page.

Save all work first (e.g., Gmail, Google Docs). While viewing a page on the site:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove all of Google's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Command+0 on Mac)

Followed your instructions, and it worked! - Background image now displays at the correct size, and the search bar is viewable once more!

Many thanks! :) (John..)
