Dropdown-toggle bug with HP Spectre x360?

more options

I'm viewing this website in particular: https://www.livingspaces.com/departments/rugs/size/10x13#

There are several dropdowns labelled Color Family, Style, Pattern, etc. I'm using a brand-new HP Spectre x360 (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-spectre-x360-2-in-1-15-6-4k-ultra-hd-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-hp-finish-in-dark-ash-silver/6188321.p?skuId=6188321) with Firefox 60.0.2. When I mouse-hover over them or click on them, nothing happens. However, when I do the same either on another computer or with the same computer using another browser (ie, Microsoft Edge), they work as expected. Since they work fine on the same computer with another browser, I'm thinking this may be a bug with Firefox. I've tried this on my Lenovo laptop with the same version of Firefox (60.0.2) and same set of Add-Ons and it works fine there. So it seems to be the combination of Firefox and this HP Spectre.

The HP Spectre has 2 graphics controllers, one an integrated Intel UHD 620 and the other an NVIDIA MX150. The problem occurs when either is enabled, so it isn't tied to one particular graphics controller.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks!

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Tracking Protection feature. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature: Tracking Protection {web link}

Hi Fred, thanks for the quick response!

I tried in Safe Mode and see the same results, no dropdown action. I also don't see anything unusual in the address bar. I took a screenshot (attached) just in case I'm missing something.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Hmm, when I mouse over those buttons the list flies down immediately without my doing anything special. Clicking the button closes the drop-down, but clicking again doesn't re-open it it. That's a little strange.

Since your Best Buy link indicate a touch screen, I'll paste this from and old thread:

Firefox auto-detects touch support on Windows. In older versions of Firefox, that could cause strange issues on some sites where certain menus could be operated ONLY by touch and not using the mouse. I don't know if that is still an issue, but here's where you find that setting if you want to experiment with it:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste touch and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled preference and edit the value to 0 (zero) and then click OK. The options are:

  • 0 => disable touch
  • 1 => enable touch
  • 2 => auto-detect whether the system supports touch (default in Fx52)

I don't know whether that will take effect immediately or after you exit and start Firefox up again. Does that have any effect on how the problem buttons work?

In the Windows 8/8.1 days, users of HP All-in-One systems also needed to disable "HID-compliant touch screen" in the Windows device manager. Hopefully that problem hasn't come back in a new form with a recent Windows 10 update.

Thanks for that, I forgot all about the touchscreen feature of the HP. In fact, when I use the touchscreen to drop the menus down, they work fine. It's just the mouse that isn't working. I can touch the dropdown with my finger and it pops open. Touching the caret again closes it.

I tried the experiment of setting dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled to a 0. I closed Firefox and restarted. The mouse still does nothing when hovering over the dropdown and also nothing when clicking the caret. But unlike above, touching via touchscreen also does not work.

For kicks I went into Device Manager and disabled the "HID-compliant touch screen" and verified that the touchscreen is completely inactive. I left the dom.w3c_touch_events.enabled preference set to 0. I tried the dropdown with the mouse, both hovering and clicking, and still nothing.

So far the only way the dropdown works is when I use the touchscreen. Hmm.

Any other ideas? Thanks for your help!

I'm not a touchscreen user myself, so I'm not very familiar with the workarounds -- if any -- other than the old ones.

I have this problem as well. So weird. Check out my post. I have two computers on the exact same website, one with Windows 10 and one without, etc. Touchscreen vs no Touchscreen. I also have your same laptop. Hmmm.

Any solutions, yet?

None that I know of. At least for me, the dropdown menus work via touchscreen, so that's at least a workaround.

Yea. Via Trouchscreen I can touch the screen and press the links, but the touchpad and mouse do not work. So weird...
