You should have set Firefox (and for that matter Windows Operating Sytem) to upgrade automatically. [In fact that will be their normal default settings]

Update by utilising your computer's or software's settings, not by clicking on ads, popups, and random webpages. Keeping software up to date helps protect you.

You appear to be on Fx34.0 so may have missed a couple of updates, as you should now be on Fx35.0.1

If you have malware or adware on your computer it will not be from Mozilla Firefox. I will append standartd advice on malware.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Firefox receives scheduled updates every 6 weeks, and sometimes in between the scheduled updates, as needed for security or stability patches. Plus you have to learn how to differentiate between the Mozilla update notifications and those from Malware that may be installed on your PC - witness those ad banners and popups.

Firefox 35.0.1 is the current release version as of Monday / Tuesday this week.

BTW, if you have a question as to whether a notice to update Firefox is legitimate or not, don't proceed - but grab a screenshot of that message and post it here. Someone here can advise you as to the validity of that message as being from Mozilla.
