Is it possible for Firefox (and Thunderbird) to be made more speech recognition friendly?

I switched to Firefox and Thunderbird after having a lot of trouble with MIE and Windows Live mail. I love them both and am very grateful to Mozilla. Now I have some problems with my hands and find voice recognition software a great boon.

I find I can do less with voice recognition in the Mozilla programs than in their Microsoft counterparts. Voice recognition "experts" tell me the reason is in the Mozilla programs rather than in the voice recognition software that I use.

Whether or not this is correct, I do not know. However, I don't want to be forced back to the Microsoft browser and email client, and so have posed my question to you.

Hello,

Both Firefox and Thunderbird are Open Source projects so are open to suggestions for future development and for experts / interested parties to request features and be involved in new feature development.

I suggest you do a couple of things:

First please leave your feedback on the problems you are having with voice recognition here: https://input.mozilla.org/en-GB/feedback

This will ensure that your comments reach the right person / team.

Secondly I suggest you start a bug (or several bugs if necessary) to log the specific issues you are having. That way engineers can respond and try to solve the problem in future versions of Firefox.

You can file bugs here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ And there are guidelines on how to report bugs here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/QA/Bug_writing_guidelines

You may also be interested in this article which is a review of accessibility in general (including speech recognition) and how open source software can help to solve the problems that currently exist:

I hope this helps.

^ That extension hasn't been updated beyond Firefox 3.6 - "not available for Firefox 26.0"
