Before the update to 4, we had back and forward buttons as icons, but the links below were just text.

Now if you choose text you get ALL text (so back and forward are word, and hard to click on).

But if you chose Icons, you can't tell what your links are any more.

If you choose both it takes up a stupid amount of space, and you can't see all your toolbar links any more.

How do I make it go back to how it was in 3 please?

You can do that with the Bookmarks Deiconizer extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/bookmarks-deiconizer

Thanks Tony - I've downloaded that, but I can't find anywhere that tell me how to use it!

Doh! Quit and reopen - didn't work first time, but it has now.

Err, on second thoughts, no.

I just added another bookmark to the toolbar, and it put all the icons back in!

Are there any controls please?

I just quit and relaunched. The icons have gone (except the back and forward etc - in other words correctly, just as I want)

but ...

the new bookmark is not on the toolbar (only in the Recent list).

What is happening, please?

Did you check the location of that bookmark?

Open the bookmark in a browser tab and click the yellow highlighted star to open the Edit This Bookmark dialog. If necessary click the arrow at the far right of the Folder line to open the tree and see the exact location.

yes.

The bookmark was set to go onto the toolbar, but it did not, and now only appears in the Recent bookmarks folder.

I've tried this lots of times now. On every occasion, the click that is supposed to place the bookmark in the toolbar always causes Firefox to revert to Icons and Text mode, and instead of appearing in the tool bar, the new bookmark is only placed in the Recent folder.

Quitting and restarting Firefox does restores the icons at the top of the toolbar, while getting rid of the annoying and ugly little coloured things between the bookmarks along the bottom of the toolbar, but new bookmarks are NOT among those.

The only ones there are those that I added before Firefox 4 was sent out.

This a bug.

IMO They should withdraw 4 and let us all go back to 3.

Maybe I should go over to Chrome.

Check that you still have the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" placed on the Bookmarks Toolbar

If the menu bar is hidden then press F10 or hold down the Alt key, that should make the "Menu Bar" appear

Make sure that you have the "Bookmarks Toolbar" visible: "View > Toolbars"

  • Check in "View > Toolbars > Customize" that the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize window onto the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If you do not see the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" or other items that are missing in the toolbar palette or on a toolbar then click the "Restore Default Set" button

None of those things worked at all, I'm afraid.

(I don't want the default set).

Thanks fro trying but this is FAR too complicated.

Surely what's needed is an option in the Customise drop-down to hide the coloured thingies (what good to they do, anyway - they just take up space for no reason whatsoever) - or better still, a 'Reinstall Version 3 And Don't Accept Any Upgrades' option.

I think I'll try Chrome.

Cheers

Do you see other bookmarks that are located in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.

You can open the Bookmarks in the sidebar via View > Sidebar > Bookmarks (Ctrl+B)

Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.

I'm afraid the F10 and Alt thing does nothing.

Yes the Bookmarks are in the folder, but there is a big gap to the right of the last one that shows up in the toolbar, where they should be but are not. (And then more of the space is wasted by that totally unnecessary Bookmarks dropdown at the end, which I never asked for and certainly don't want).

Sorry if I seem a little irritated, but it is so annoying when companies introduce change for changes' sake, and so make a perfectly good product less good.

Thanks for your help anyway.

If the bookmarks toolbar is visible and the menu bar is hidden then you see a Bookmarks Menu button at the far right hand side of the Bookmarks Toolbar if that is what you mean.
