Firefox 38 slow to respond or hangs out of options?
After the latest Firefox 38.0.1 it has become unusable. I have tried many different suggestions found on the forum and through Google searches but noting seems to cure my issue.
I use MSN as my home page and initially thought this was the root cause but using IE I don't have the hanging issue. I have tried reinstalling, refreshing, new profile creation, updating all video and other hardware drivers etc. but can't seem to find the key....
The only thing that seems to alleviate the symptoms is using the "noscript" and "adblock plus" add-ons.
I have added troubleshooting information below.
Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated.

Hello!
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
- Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
- After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
- Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
- Windows:
- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
- Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
- Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
- Windows:
- Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
- Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
- Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
Please report back to say if this helped you!
Thank you.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Safe+Mode
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes
You can check for problems with preferences.
Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can set all plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page to check for issues caused by plugins.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.
While Microbot and cor-el's suggestions did not help I am pursuing the suggestion made by FredMcD.
@FredMcD - You mention running a registry scanner after removal of Notron programs. Could you provide any recommendations for such a scanning tool?
Thank you again to all of you for the help.
UPDATE:
Removing Symantec appears to have corrected my issues with Firefox. I will try to re-install it after running a registry scan and report on the findings.
Is there any information I can send that would help resolve this conflict in future releases of Firefox?
Well, not to much. Just remember what you do here and use that for future problems (remove / reinstall).
WinUtilities Free Edition program is very good and has MANY useful programs that are great to have. Some things will not be available in the free, but you can buy it if you like it. http://hi.ylcomputing.com/products
