Every now and then, when I'm on Firefox it will not respond then the window will fill white and at the top it will say "Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding)".

It responds after about 10-15 seconds but this keeps happening every 2-3 Minutes and is making Firefox unusable to watch videos on Youtube and read other things as when it starts responding it take me back to the top of the page.

I cannot pinpoint which websites this is on but it normally (But not always) happens when I have more than one tab open (Usually on Youtube + SammyServers.com)

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.

You can try to decrease the value of the pref network.http.max-connections from 255 to a more modest setting like 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

This problem is not limited to Firefox. I've been having the same issue with Firefox but also with Microsoft programs including Expressing Web 4, Outlook 2007, Excel 2007 and more. This is a Microsoft problem and it's killing our productivity.

If you believe you have found a Microsoft problem affecting firefox, especially one involving the number of connections I suggest you explain it in your own thread, it will be of great interest to all Firefox Windows OS users.

(There may be better places to post such info, but you have a large audience here, others will quickly confirm or deny any assertion of a widespread problem)

After a frustrating time running around firefox help pages, I found a fix from an old techmynd.com post... so glad! Although it demonstrates the process with an older version it works just as well. Link to techmynd's Firefox Freezes for a Moment After Every 10 Sec – Fix

I am running 7.0.1 at the moment

UPDATE ***

Update: While a temporary fix, I don't think I have solved the problem. The problem occurs less frequently, however it does still occur... --

UPDATE 23/11/2011: OK, tried this on the mozilla support page - Firefox hangs at random times - about 3 days ago and it has been great since. No hangs or "not reponding". thankfully found a solution...

Follow the steps (and heed the warning: will clear your browsing history and remove bookmarks of the day).

If anyone finds the above post from frankal about changing the preference works please vote the answer as helpful AFTER you have tried it. There is a possibility it is a workaround that could help, if so it will certainly warrant further investigation.

If there is such a problem with session restore then that is usually caused by either having a lot of tabs open that have a large sessions history (closed tabs) or you have security software that is delaying Firefox with saving (renaming) the sessionstore-##.js temp file.

You can also check for multiple numbered sessionstore-##.js files.

      • UPDATE***

I just tried frankals suggestion and it seems to have fixed the problem. So far so good anyways. If that changes I'll let you all know.

Thanks frankal =)

update: Sorry, realise there are a few suggestions/solutions on that page. I followed the "Create a new places database" solution and that worked for me!

The solution of clearing the corrupt places.sqlite of course leaves questions unanswered

  • what is causing this ?
  • what is the corruption, may it be necessary to regress to a much earlier date and so loose a lot of bookmarks (and probably require a manual backup and restore rather than an automated one)
  • the add-on mentioned in http://blog.bonardo.net/2011/09/30/is-your-firefor-freezing-at-regular-intervals may be a better solution to places.sqlite problems, but note that should have been fixed in Firefox 8 (This thread was started in relation to Firefox 3.6; which is currently still supported)

I've noticed that this problem only occurs when I have pages loaded (in one or more tabs) that are running active content (e.g. AJAX, Flash, etc.). The problem never occurs when only static pages are loaded. This leads me to believe that their may be a problem with Firefox's handling of HTMLrequest or response messages in regards to processing dynamic content. For example, a thread may be spinning waiting for a response.

I took the advice of a previous poster. I found anything to do with SQLITE in my profile and deleted all references to sqlite. (unfortunately I deleted cookies.sqlite, and I will have to rebuild those) but everything works AND RESPONDS. Firefox even seems faster now.

I've had this same problem on one of my computers for a while too (now at version 9.0.1), and I've found that the problem pretty much goes away if you disable all of the load*InBackground features in about:config :

  • browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground
  • browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground
  • browser.tabs.loadInBackground

Double-click on each of these to set to false, and you should be good to go.

How about FIREFOX actually FIXES this issue instead of coming up with new version every week with the same problem? Or would that make too much sense?

I've followed over a dozen different threads about the same problem. I have to dismiss theories that it is a Windows problem that plagues multiple apps because I now keep Chrome open 24x7, and just switch to it every time Firefox goes into "Not Responding" mode {Which is 6 to 10 times per hour}, and Chrome as NEVER displayed this bug.

I've used the "WhatIsHang" app to try and ID what is happening, but the result dump is a bit too techie for me. I have an old XP Pro PC and a Linux PC, neither of which I use very often, but will do so starting this week to see if the problem is unique to Windows 7 or not... {Both now have the latest version of Firefox, and sync bookmarks... After a significant amount of time using those PCs "as is", I will begin adding Extensions to try & dupe the add-ons I have on my Win 7 FF}.

Collectively, we (those who are experiencing this problem) have lost a great deal of productivity; I'd love to see a bounty for a documented cause & solution!

If you have your own problem read information in this thread but it is much better to ask your own question using the links and prompts from /questions/new

This is an old thread many things will have changed. The initial question was asked with Firefox 3.6 and we are now using Firefox 11 on the standard Release channel.

Telemetry monitoring option now exists and opting in for this allows reporting of data including hangs. With Firefox 13 it is hoped that an improved hang detection method may be in use.

Firefox developers are obviously constantly reviewing and trying to improve Firefox see for instance:

I have had this problem on two computers running Firefox. I finally discovered that Carbonite Online Backup was what was causing my problem. My computers had AMD 4 core processors and I have 8GB of memory but for whatever reason Carbonite would bring it to a crawl at times. I can pause Carbonite and the problem goes away. Turn it back on and I'm at a crawl again. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone else has Carbonite running.

No doubt a large number of Firefox users are experiencing this "NOT RESPONDING" problem and I am just one of them.

FF has been my favorite browser and I would really like to continue using it but this problem is making it no longer tenable. Much to my dismay I am now relying on Chrome and IE.

I am even beginning to suspect that something deliberate might have been done to sabotage firefox. It is unbelievable that developers would not recognize this as a serious problem.

At least some instances of this problem are because of FF having to wait to write to the disk. I tracked this down on an old netbook with an early SSD, that has horrible Read/Write times. Because system services take priority, FF hangs until it gets permission to write to the disk. It's not really anyone's fault, except for the people who put these drives on the market.

Setting your cache to zero (options, advanced, network) will improve matters, but not completely eliminate them, if this is the source of your issues. (The online backup was presumably using the disk a lot, causing the same issue.)

Every 20 seconds firefox freezes, bar at top goes not responding, any typing or use of browser is interrupted. Also Task Manager shows firefox.exe *32 at 25%, then once it recovers it goes back to 0-3%. Browser is always around 900MB, as it has been for ages, I have tones of tabs open, and 10 groups all full of tabs, of course they do not load unless I click on them. Just typing this firefox froze 4 times.

PS: will Firefox ever go officially portable like Opera or Maxthon? Both of those browsers allow being set as default unlike Firefox Portable.
