I recently updated to Mac OS Big Sur, and completely deleted and rebuilt my thunderbird profiles because they were taking >50 GB of space. I'm now on 94.0b1, and struggling with a few things (I can't figure out how to sync contacts with gmail either). One thing that's really puzzling is that I haven't figured out how to stop messages being marked as read. I've restarted TB in troubleshooting mode, checked and unchecked the box for automatically marking as read many times, and don't know what else to try. Thanks!

If you're not using Bitdefender or similar app, it's not known why this happens in 94b1.

For the contacts, in Address Book, File/New/CardDAV Address Book, enter your Google address, then the Contacts should be autodetected. That's working in TB 91.

Thanks @sfhowes. I filed a somewhat inarticulate bug report after looking for bitdefender (no luck) and perusing that thread (nothing seems to work). Thanks for the CarDav tips. Somehow I thought I needed to use a more complex URL of the form https://google.com/m8/carddav/principlas/_uids_/yourname@gmail.com/lists/default/. Google security settings blocked that. Simply putting, as you said, the user@gmail.com or user@university.edu and setting domain to gmail.com did the job. Thanks!
