downloads open in cmd window

When I click on the down arrow, the arrow with the underline, then right-click the file and ask to open containing folder, the cmd window opens showing a folder I use for images. I want it to open the Download folder. Any help appreciated, thank you.

FWIW : I never open any downloads from the Library, but I always press the Windows key + R on my keyboard (enter "downloads" in the dialog that appears - next time I only have to click on it, as it already is entered) and go to my downloads folder, where I click on the file I want to open. Does that work for you ?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Hello and thank you for your help and a reply.

I started Firefox in 'safe-mode' but there is no download arrow in the tool bar now. So I can't try it.

Thank you

Hi, I installed the flash player update, then I used nimbus to take a screen shot (selected area), then I left clicked the down-arrow icon to find my screenshot. It is there, but when I right-click to open 'file location', it still opens the black cmd window. If I left click the down arrow icon and select "Show All Downloads", it does open the correct a window with all the downloads present. It is in a Folder called 'library'. And that name . . 'Library' is preceded by the Orange Firefox Logo. I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hello berber20,

There are three ways to get to the Library => Downloads :

  1. Click om the icon at the right end of the toolbar that looks like books on a shelf and choose "Downloads" => "Show all Downloads",
  2. Click on the 3-bar menu => Library => choose "Downloads" => "Show all Downloads",
  3. The fastest way : press "Ctrl + Shift + B" and choose "Downloads".

Does this do what you are looking for ?

Hi and thank you for a reply and the suggestions.

The best suggestion from those three is the second one.

The other two still open the 'cmd' window when I right-click to try and open the file location.

The middle suggestion is the best so far, as it does open the file location when I right-click the file from the folder.

I would like the file location folder to open when I left-click the down-arrow icon and then right-click the file, and choose from the selection shown (5 options) "Open Containing Folder". It doesn't do that, it opens the 'black cmd window'. I've attached an image that may possibly help.

Thank you.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

I totally forgot the easiest and fastest way : press "Ctrl + J" ......

Been searching for an explanation as to why it opens a black cmd window instead of "Open Containing Folder" for you, but so far to no avail  :(

I'm hoping that someone else will (fingers crossed ..... )

Hi and thanks for all the help I've received. I just did a system restore and the first attempt failed. I had to go through a few options to recover use of my laptop. It seems to be working now, but I'll see how it performs. In my view, system restore is dodgy. Thanks anyway, I'll take note of all the suggestions ans see if I can live with it.

Yes, I tried that and it seems the best solution for me. Not too many clicks and direct access.

I nearly ditched the laptop !

I'm glad you tried it and that it works for you - that's how I always do it, and you're right : not too many clicks and firect access.

(this way you can of course also easily get to other folders, like "Documents" etc.)

I still wonder why in the Library, when you click "Open Containing Folder" it opens a black cmd window instead.

I tried it earlier (downloaded a few things first) and it worked as it supposed to .....

(but "my way" is so much faster)

'Still hoping that maybe someone will come with an explanation for this weird behavior.

I'd like to thank everyone who helped me with this issue.

The laptop is a Vaio and it's served me well (about 7 years) but the display is inadequate now, that's one reason I was going to ditch it. But one more try with the restore utility which worked, and I'm back to business.

Very grateful to all.
