Firefox doesn't stop loading the page I'm viewing - multiple copies when right-clicking the BACK button.

On some websites, when I click on a page, Firefox continues to load copies of the page in the background. When I try to click the BACK button, I have to back up through multiple copies of the page I'm on, to get back to the previous page. I have tried running FF in safe mode, turning off add-ons, and turning off hardware acceleration, to no avail. Also, tried refreshing FF, to no avail. Any suggestions?

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required) where you see this happening?

Do you see the reload icon (circular arrow) at the left end of the location bar or the Stop (x) icon?

Note that some page may load additional content via XHR in the background. You can see this in the Network Monitor.

A couple of sites I have had this problem on: http://www.democraticunderground.com/ http://www.politicususa.com/ The location bar will cycle back and forth between reload (circular arrow) and stop (x).

I checked those websites and I don't have this problem.

What version of Firefox do you have installed?

No problems here as well. I left the Network Monitor open for some time and only a few google ad request showed.


If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Currently using version 54.0.1. I am starting to see the same problem on www.msn.com. As I said before, the problem occurs with extensions turned off, hardware acceleration off, and even in SAFE mode. Currently running the default theme, as well.

I am going to throw another comment in here. While researching this problem, I have read that Firefox allows this repeated loading of web pages for sites that want to boost their hit count. If this is true, I want to know how to turn it off!!!

Still continuing to have the same problem. Current version 56.0.1. The problem is so bad now that I have to exit FF regularly to empty the memory, otherwise the memory fills up, and FF freezes.

You can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
