THe instructions for creating a profile seem to be specific for WinXP. I'm using Windows 7, so will they work in my version of it?

When the little window comes up, there is no "yes" button, there is a "remember password." Look for that instead of "yes."

It is possible that there is a problem with the key3.db and signons.sqlite files that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the key3.db and signons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.

@cor-el: Okay I was all set to follow instructions that involved creating a new profile on a test basis, but the instructions seemed to assume that I was using WinXP. Will they work in Win7?

Please try the instructions in the article and try to follow the instructions. You cannot just look at the article and say it doesn't apply to me. There is a operating system switcher at the top in which you can change to reflect your operating system. Our system should identify your operating system correctly as Windows 7 unless a modification has been made in the past.

Okay, I had some time off work today, so I decided to get serious about this situation. I tried clearing my cache completely, running Firefox in safe mode, deleting Firefox from the Program Files (x86) directory and reinstalling it, and resetting Firefox. And I still can't save passwords in Firefox. The only passwords I can save are saved by the websites themselves. So what am I supposed to try next??

I'm still not sure if you are talking about saving passwords in the Password Manager or that you want websites to remember you.

Can you clarify that?

Note that website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving and filling the name and password.

You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save names and passwords and other form data.

Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.

• Create a cookie 'allow' exception to keep such cookies, especially for secure websites and when cookies expire when Firefox is closed.
• Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

• do not clear the Cookies
• do not clear the Site Preferences

• Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you want to keep.
