Right click a tool bar and click Customize...

If the Back/Forward button is there drag it to the tool bar and drop it.

VTDBA thanks for that but unfortunately when I am on the page with no back button I clicked and opened customize and there is no icon in there for back/forward to drag and drop, like in your attachment?

  • Make sure that the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
  • If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
  • If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • If you do not see that item then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up

Has it been dropped on one you can't see?

Are all your tool bars visible?

cor-el thanks. I have tried all that. I made sure the navigation and bookmarks toolbars were visible but I cant see it in the customize toolbar palette and when I click restore default set button it doesn't appear either?

also when I clicked on See Also Back and Forward or other... it just took me to a page that said create a knowledge base etc?

appreciate your help though

I can see the back/forward button but it is just greyed out and inactive so it is there just not active.

If the buttons are greyed out, is there a chance that you're opening these pages in tabs instead of going to them in the current tab?

Maevrim, unfortunately no, it isn't opening in a new tab. It just opens the new page in the same tab and then the back button is just greyed out and inactive.

Anyone else got any ideas before I just go back to using Internet Explorer. How about firefox support techs, anyone out there??????

I too have the problem that when I move to a new page in the same tab the back button is frequently (but not always) greyed out.

I run a fully updated Win XP Pro system.

clearcomms, yeah its annoying isnt it. I have never struck it before. If Firefox support techs dont come to the rescue today I am going back to Internet Explorer.

Maevrim I agree Cor-el (he or she) should be on a payroll. It's all getting too technical and time consuming for me. I am just going to go back to IE and then when an upgrade of Firefox is available I might download it and see if they have fixed the probem. thanks for your reply tho.

There's always the option of trying an install of an older version of Firefox that was working for you.

I hope you get something worked out!

Hey Maevrim good one. I hadn't thought of that. where do I get an older version. the one I used to use worked fine. its just the new one that is the prob.

yeah, I got no back button or forward button. you'd think they'd think of that, and why should we have to search hell to find how to get it on the task bar? Sucks. Computer people are fricking stupid. Am I the only one with feelings? Pisses me off.

Did you try to click the "Restore Default Set" button on the Customize window?

You can also try to delete the localstore.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder or use the entry to reset the toolbars on the Save mode start window.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
