What you need to know:

  • All Pocket accounts will be transitioned to use Mozilla accounts. For those who enjoy signing in to Pocket via Google or Apple, you'll still benefit from the enhanced security that's enabled by having Pocket backed by Mozilla accounts.
  • By using a Mozilla account to access Pocket in any browser or mobile device, you will benefit from Mozilla’s privacy policy, which always puts the user first. (To learn how to manage your Mozilla account and the data associated with it, click here.)
  • Users will continue to be able to sign in to Pocket via Apple ID or Google sign in, powered by their existing (or new) Mozilla account.
  • This change, which will affect all Pocket accounts starting on July 11, 2023, will give users the benefit of enhanced security functionality, like two-factor authentication (2FA) and account recovery keys.
  • All Pocket users will need to sign in with a Mozilla account by August 15, 2023.

Pocket, which has been a part of Mozilla’s family of products since 2017, is your home and guide to discover and stay up to date for great content around the Web. Pocket lets you save things from anywhere on the Web and find suggestions from our editors for what to read next. When you use Pocket, you can access saved articles and videos in a private and secure account, and read or watch on your computer or mobile device.

In order to provide additional security benefits to users, all Pocket accounts, including those that use Apple & Google authentication to sign in, will be migrated to use Mozilla account starting July 11, 2023. Users will still be able to sign in to Pocket on any browser or mobile device, powered by Mozilla accounts.

Why is Pocket migrating to Mozilla accounts?

Previously, Pocket allowed users to sign up and sign in via four options:

  • Email and password managed by Pocket
  • Mozilla account
  • Google account
  • Apple account

Going forward, we are removing Pocket accounts and relying on Mozilla accounts as our centralized and secure account system. Additionally, users will still be able to choose to continue with Google or Apple when signing in. The change is that Google and Apple authentication will be provided via a Mozilla account instead of Pocket directly. Soon, all Pocket customers will need to sign in via a Mozilla account.

With this transition, not only will it make Pocket more secure, but it also allows you to opt in to enhanced security functionality like two-factor authentication (2FA) and account recovery keys.

In addition, this will allow our Pocket team to focus on providing more value to the core Pocket product and features.

We want you to have the best security for your account — and we’re lucky to be a part of the Mozilla family of products that have a team working full-time on creating the best authentication experience possible.

What is the migration process like?

Existing users of Pocket who sign in via username or email address and password will be asked to transition their account the next time they sign in. At that time, they’ll have the option to create a new Mozilla account or use an existing one. They can also skip the migration step for a limited time.

Google and Apple ID authenticated users will be transitioned to authenticate with a Mozilla account starting July 11, 2023. After this date, Pocket users will be prompted to migrate to a Mozilla account in order to sign in and access their Pocket account. If you access Pocket via your username and password, you should create a Mozilla account or use a current Mozilla account to sign in at your earliest convenience.

Aside from changing how you sign in to Pocket, this does not affect your saved items. For Pocket Premium subscribers, signing in with your Mozilla account will not impact your subscription.
