Adding on to the above:

By default, Firefox sets up three rows of five icons, for a total of 15. You don't see all of those? Depending on your zoom setting, you may see 8 or some other number of thumbnails. To see all 15, you can "zoom out" using the usual methods (for example, hold down the Ctrl key and tap the - key once or twice).

If you prefer a zoom level other than 100% zoom and it doesn't stick (you need to zoom out every time you load the new tab), you can change a setting that should resolve that:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newt and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtab.preload preference to switch the value from true to false

If you want more than 15 tiles -- huge screen? -- you have a couple options. You could change the number of rows and columns using Firefox's built-in settings, or you could consider an add-on to restyle the page.

Modify Built-in Row and Column Setting

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newt and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.columns preference and change the value from 5 to whatever you like, then click OK

(4) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.rows preference and change the value from 3 to whatever you like, then click OK

If you decide to restore the default values later, you can right-click > Reset on the preference name as a shortcut to editing it back.

Add-on Option

I'm not sure this will work in Firefox 57+, but it should work for now: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/

To adjust the display, open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Find New Tab Tools on the right side and click its Options button (on Mac, Preferences button). You can open a new tab to see what the changes do.
