I get this when I backspace on bottom of emails <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:"Cambri and more
step 1 - I copy and past a word doc from a mail merge from word into thunderbird.
step 2- I cut and paste the email and subject
step 3- at the end of my email I then backspace and get the following (dump)

It's part of the horrible bloated code that Microsoft products generate. When you backspace, I guess you're deleting a closing tag, and all the unenclosed material appears verbatim.
I think if you really want to use this procedure to generate your material, you need to use something that reveals the hidden code so you can navigate more accurately. I use Stationery, which provides a useful HTML code view window. This would allow you to position your cursor outside the pasted code's closing tag.
