That is not part of Firefox. I have 3 versions of Firefox installed and updated regularly and I have never seen that. I sounds like a banner ad. Do you have anything installed to block ads, like AdBlock Plus?
- AdBlock Plus: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
- Install AdBlock Plus filter list (EasyList is good): http://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started#subscription
- AdBlock Plus Getting Started: http://adblockplus.org/en/getting_started
- AdBlock Plus home page: http://adblockplus.org/en/

Not part of your question, but....
You need to update some plug-ins:
- Plug-in check: https://www-trunk.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
- Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape: Installing/Updating Adobe Reader in Firefox
- Shockwave Flash (Adobe Flash or Flash): Updating Flash in Firefox
