I have Thunderbird 68.4.1 running on Windows 10. Today, I can't send emails through a gmail account that have a link. Not even to myself. The link is to a page in my business's website.

I can send emails with links from other domains - just not to or from gmail ones.

I get an email from mailer-daemon@googlemail.com subject is: Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

The email says:

Message may contain a virus Your message wasn't delivered to [my email address] because it may contain a virus. Learn how to check for and prevent viruses.

It then has a link to click on, which is no help at all.

The same think happens whether I attach the link or insert it in the body.

And this only started happening today. I have done nothing to my computer in the past week.

Thanks for any help - this is pretty limiting.

Hi Just a quick test to narrow down whether this is connected with using Thunderbird, or is to do with Gmail. On the computer that has Thunderbird - open your browser. Log in to Gmail and create an email with the link you have been trying to send. Send the message from within Gmail. Report back whether your email is rejected or goes through OK. Thanks, Agnes

Another test - If the answer to the first test is that Gmail sends it OK - is there anything Thunderbird is adding to your message (such as a signature, image or link)? Try sending a plain message with no branding or background, no signature, no images, and just the link you are having trouble with. Let us know! Agnes

Hi, Agnes. Thanks for all the great ideas!

I went to the gmail website - no problem sending the exact email. Though it's a big drag using that web client.

Then I tried using Thunderbird again, sending email to someone sitting next to me.

- stripped out my sig, which includes a link to my website, but left website attachment - fail

- deleted website attachment, but left my sig - succeeded

so this is weird to me.

and then I found this on the gmail website, which makes no sense to me: it says they don't like .com attachments anymore. photo attached. what???

Just for a hoot, I tried sending a different website through thunderbird. I picked Chewy.com, my cat's 'nip dealer. And it failed.

So next I sent a .org website - another one of my sites. Sent it through thunderbird. And it went through just fine.

So google doesn't like me sending .com websites. Unless I use the gmail web client.

This sucks.

Am I alone in this problem?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Nice test sequence! That certainly narrowed it down. I don't use Gmail so I can't confirm further. If we let this question sit a while maybe someone else will offer an opinion. Agnes

Thanks, Agnes. Fingers crossed. Though you've been the only response so far... Appreciate your help.

why is your link an attachment? That can only come down to the sending process.

When I copy and paste a link from the browser to Thunderbird I do not get an attachment, only a link in the body of an email.

Hi, Matt.

Doesn't matter if the link is an attachment or in the body of the email. when it's a .com, Gmail marks it as potential virus & doesn't send it.

Unless, of course, I'm sending from within the gmail phone app, or from the gmail web client.

But from Thunderbird - fail every time.

Thanks for your input.
