When you are on their page, before clicking the link, could you check the permission setting on the Page Info dialog (either):

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Permissions
  • Tools menu > Page Info > Permissions

It's the "Install Extensions or Themes" permission. If it's set on block, change it to Allow and then close the dialog and try again.

Any luck?

No luck, but I did get some info. A dialog box tells me that it couldn't be installed because Firefox can't modify the needed file. I just got the latest version of Firefox, and apparently this wasn't an issue with the older one.

Thanks anyway. These things are good to know.

Try to set the extensions.alwaysUnpack pref to true on the about:config page.

Thanks, cor-el, but you're looking at a first-class technophobe. I got lost at "profile files" and totally spooked at "don't try unless you know what you're doing" and "This could void your warranty." Sorry I'm such a cyber-wimp. I do appreciate the support and help, though.

Hello BayouBengalFan, try cor-el's suggestion, the message :

This could void your warranty....I'll be careful, I promise!, it is a joke, just to be little careful, i'll write the steps analytical :

  1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
  2. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
  3. In the Search area type(or copy/paste from here) the extensions.alwaysUnpack
  4. double-click on it to make it TRUE (it is false by default)
  5. close the about:config tab (or window), exit firefox and restart-it.

yes, you can do it

thank you

Thanks, ideato. I made the changes, and they did take (yea!) Unfortunately, I get the same message: Firefox can't modify the needed file. Well, there's something to be said for moral victories.

mmmm, i think another option is to Reset Firefox

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

if you find something....unclear, please tell us

thanks again

Thanks again, but that was one of the first things I tried. I might try to see if the folks at Goodsearch have heard about this problem from other users. If so, they might have the fix.

Hi BayouBengalFan,

I'm so sorry for the trouble! Can you tell me which tool you wanted to install?

Was it the GoodApp toolbar: https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2013-09-13-11-18-27-f50b3c.png

Or the Goodshop ToGo button: https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/images/2013-09-13-11-18-40-ef7a52.png

Thank you!
