application failed to send a message so I cancelled and now it wont open at all

mail which I have been using for months will not open at all. this occurred after a mail with photo attachments failed to send .it was taking a long time . on failure I cancelled it in the option box. now clicking on the mail icon does not work

Have you rebooted your computer (turned off the power)
