Here's one extension that offers that feature: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/only-icons/

And another: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multirow-bookmarks-toolbarplus/

and one more: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/roomy-bookmarks-toolbar/

re-arranged the hyperlinks to the add-ons to place the "smallest" with the least mods at the top

You might try this. On the Bookmarks Toolbar, right click on the particular bookmark on the toolbar, then click on Properties. You can abbreviate the Name right down to nothing. You can also put similar bookmarks into Folders with appropriate names on the Bookmarks Toolbar. Again, right clicking on the Bar will offer New Folder.

Not everyone seems to know that overflow of bookmarks goes down the right side of the page, accessed via the chevrons(double arrowhead).

To reduce Add-ons to icons open the Customize feature via the three bar menu and at the bottom you will see Mode where you can select Icons, Icons + Text, or Text only.

Yes, removing the "Name" from each bookmark will get rid of the "text", but it also eliminates seeing the bookmark (or folder) "name" on cursor hover (= empty "tooltip"). Like using a sledge hammer to drive a trim finishing nail; I myself, prefer using a "tack hammer" for trim work.

Sounds like a feature that was added to the default Firefox installation by an add-on. "Icons, Icons + Text, or Text only" was never a part of the Australis UI = Firefox 29 and later. But there are a few extensions that restore that feature. But, when Firefox did have that feature it didn't affect Bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar.

To "hide" the text for Add-on icons that are sitting in the Menu Panel (3-bar button 'door hanger) there are a few UserStyles available. Here's one that I adapted from another UserStyle: https://userstyles.org/styles/126080/australis-menu-panel-mods Smaller icons - 6 wide - sans text - 200px Panel height - Sync / Fxa menu item removed and it retains the Tooltip-on-hover But the downside is that not all Add-on toolbar buttons conform exactly the the parameters of the default Toolbar buttons as used in Firefox. Some add-on Toolbar Buttons are too large or have a larger "Button" outline; and add-on toolbar buttons that include a contextual menu make 'things' even worse - 3 different sets of code to 'construct' the context menu have been used over the years; most still work, but with rarely mentioned flukes, but those faults become apparent when using CSS code to reduce the Menu Panel elements sizing.

This is the original UserStyle I used to make a UserStyle for my own use. https://userstyles.org/styles/104419/firefox-australis-menu-panel-fix Better than mine, but I wanted smaller that 80% button sizes for the number of add-ons I have installed and a shorter vertical height for the Menu Panel.

the-edmeister As a frequent reader of this Forum, I bow to your knowledge and experience. All I can say is that it works for me. I know the many icons on my toolbars, helped by the way I group them. Icons in folders have their text with them, usually heavily abbreviated. I must admit to being handicapped in answering as my Firefox has moved away from default, to my using advantage. I don't think many users will regard all the changes as improvements. I'm not sure why but my bookmark icons only do show the names when I hover over them; as do the add-on icons.

I didn't see any need to confine the answers to toolbars in the quest for space. I have nothing against multi-row toolbars except that they do take up space; I believe my set-up is superior.

Just a little addition. When I hover over a bookmarks icon without text it shows the Location(url) which is just as good as the name. On the subject of "space", there are two considerations - space(room) on a toolbar and space(room) on the webpage.

atrrouttricker Are you making any progress? If you are not familiar with the icons(you soon will be), you can abbreviate names e.g. NYTimes followed by W Post.
