Why is Firefox now FORCING advertising on to my web browser when we get enough from all other sources?

The latest upgrade (June 3, 2015) now forces advertising onto my internet browser. With all of the additional sources of advertising this is just too overwhelming. Need to find another solution.

Could you please explain what you mean and include screenshot.

If you are not talking about Tiles or pocket maybe it is a malware or adware issue.

Hi John, I attached the screen shot. This upgrade and the previous upgrade stated that Yahoo is the recommended search engine. I have only used Yahoo for years and I don't need Firefox to make me use that search engine and then add more advertising and menu bars to the window.

Mozilla Ad.png is the screen shot with the add opened.

Mozilla Ad 2.png is the screen shot with the add closed. In addition look at the icons for Yahoo - none of the icons have pictures attached.

Thank you for your help. Dave

Missing icons are usually supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you might see by little boxes that show the hex code of the characters instead. If you have a font installed that covers this Unicode range then you may see a real (CJK) character and not the little box with the CSS code.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).

Hi Dave, I am not sure if the Firefox ad you see is genuine & from Mozilla. If not it will be something you should report as misusing Mozilla trademarks. If it is a Mozilla ad then it will be an ordinary advert like any other.

What you are looking at is not a Mozilla site or Firefox internal page. This is not the browser adding adverts or advert menu bars. Both screenshots are apparently a Yahoo Mail site. Yahoo mail & Yahoo search pages contain adverts &|or sponsored links.

Key into the address bar about:home post a screenshot of that. It should be a standard Firefox page with a Yahoo search bar. And possibly some small promotional snippet from Mozilla.

Also try navigating to about:preferences#search that should show what is being used as your default search engine, and offer the opportunity to set it to the standard Yahoo one.
