The attach/paperclip has disappeared. How do I bring it back or is there another way to send an attachment?

Previously I could easily send an attachment from Word. Now the attach/paperclip symbol is missing. Is there a way to bring it back? Or, is there another way to send an attachment?

Despite the "Many improvements to attachments handling during compose" or that "attachments can now be reordered using a dialog, keyboard shortcuts or drag and drop" or "The "attach" button moved to the right above the attachment pane." NOTHING WORKS. Can someone please tell me, step by step, how to send an attachment? I have Windows 10. Thank you

What does not work? You originally said you do not have the attachment button and I linked you to the page that tells you where it moved to. If you want step by step tell us where you are starting. Do you not see the attach button in the upper right above where the attachment box opens?

This is my starting point: I open my email and click "new". Previously, the paper clip/attach symbol showed above the address space. I would click on the attach symbol and a list of documents would come up with the latest document at the top of the list. I would click on that and the document/file name would show in the upper right hand box. I do not see the attach button in the upper right where the attachment box opens.

Hello,

In order to better assist you with your issue please provide us with a screenshot. If you need help to create a screenshot, please see How do I create a screenshot of my problem?

Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the Browse... button below the Post your reply box. This will help us to visualize the problem.

Thank you!

And state what version you are using.

Let's start with you are dealing with a semi-computer illiterate. I do not know what version I am using. So....I pressed PrtSrn. Nothing happened. I then pressed Windows Start. There is no Windows Paint Program. What does show is; Windows Edge, (all Windows) Office 2016 tools, Office Tools, Silverlight, Solitaire Collective, Store and Wi-Fi. Please stay with me. I want to solve this. I just had two martinis out of frustration but i am still alert.

The version is in the same place it is in all software. You click the Help menu and select About Thunderbird.

I finally found a site with a picture of where the attachment button moved to in version 60. If you are using version 60 do you not see the new button placement? https://blog.mozilla.org/thunderbird/2018/08/whats-new-in-thunderbird-60/

Thank you for the above two responses. I clicked the Help button and About Thunderbird. It tells me about Thunderbird but that's about it. I do not know if I am using version 60. I clicked on the above web site but that is confusing. There is what appears to be a "screen shot"? but it is so small I can't read it. Please try again and also tell me how I determine if I am using version 60.

I already did. It is in Help-About. Click the images to make them larger. It is not that hard! I guess I cannot help you.

I clicked "help" and the about Thunderbird logo comes up. As I said previously, that panel tells me about Thunderbird but that's about it. I tried clicking the images to make them larger but nothing happens. You say it is not hard but I can't make it happen. I appreciate your efforts but i am still at a loss. Is there a way to do a screen share? Or is it possible to talk to someone? And how do I determine if I am using version 60?

re :I then pressed Windows Start. There is no Windows Paint Program. It is usually under 'Accessories'.

RE: 'Help' > 'About Thunderbird' I clicked "help" and the about Thunderbird logo comes up. It should look like image below. The version is immediately below the large type 'Thunderbird' at the top. In the image example it says 52.9.1 (32 bit)

Alternatively: In Thunderbird

  • 'Help' > 'Troubleshooting information'
  • This opens in a new tab
  • Under 'Application basics'
  • Name: Thunderbird
  • Version: what does it say ?

In the forum question you will see the image, click on that image to make it larger.

So you're not using TB60, and therefore much of the previous conversation is irrelevant. ;-)

Usually when a user says a particular button has gone missing, they don't seem to notice that other things went missing too.

On this basis, I'm going to guess that the toolbar has vanished.

  • Open the Composition window; that is, write a new message, or reply to an existing message
  • Press F10, or alt to make a menu appear
  • In that menu, select View and then Toolbars
  • Tick the checkbox for Menu Bar
  • Now you have a menu, so you can go directly to View|Toolbars and tick the checkbox for Composition Toolbar
  • (While you're doing this, I'd suggest you tick all the checkboxes in the View|Toolbars menu)

Has the errant Attach button re-appeared?

As an aside, you can attach any file, or even another email message, by drag-and-dropping it onto the addressing box in Thunderbird's Composition window.

If you can already see all the toolbars as mentioned by Zenos, but still no 'Attach' button, then try this: 'View' > 'Toolbars' > 'Customise' a new window opens called 'Customise toolbar' at the bottom, click on 'Restore Default Set'. click on 'Done'

My daughter and grandson were here. Between them the problem is solved. 1. Click "write".

           A blank email comes up.

2. Click "file" then "attach"

           Click "file" on the pop-up

3. Recent documents come up. they are listed chronologically with the latest

document at the top of the list.

Very simple. I appreciate your efforts and staying with me.
